While most of North America hibernates under snow and ice, JWorld San Diego racing classes are in full swing. Two of our friends from Toronto, Simon and Jori, joined local sailor Craig for a week of J80 training recently.

Simon and Jori were preparing for their upcoming local race season. “I recently purchased a 27 foot boat with a bow sprit,” said Simon. “That was the primary reason for wanting to take racing lessons on a J80. I took the lessons with a friend, and we hope to do some double-handed racing this coming season.”

High pressure weather created light to moderate winds and warm, sunny conditions, allowing us to get in lots of repetition on short windward leeward courses. As always, the class included lots of spinnaker work. We focused on becoming proficient with bear away sets at the windward mark, and windward and gybe takedowns at the leeward mark. “Over the course of the week I have become very comfortable setting and dousing the spinnaker,” said Simon. “Having the chance to spend time in each position on the boat has provided me with a much better feel for the nuances of each position and the importance of coordinating movements on the boat.”

As an instructor, I always enjoy sailing with out-of-town clients because I get to see our city through fresh eyes and re-discover the beauty of San Diego Bay. Simon summed it up best: “Dolphins to starboard. Seal on port. Perfect weather in 5 to 10 knots of breeze on flat water. Life is good.”
